Chapter Nine: What we're made for

Naruto forced another grin. He didn't want to talk about his past if he could avoid it, and Sakura seemed smart enough to understand. After her impromptu offer to join their crew, she thanked him and left, mumbling something about preparing reports for her absent master.

With more time on his hands than he wanted, and no mission in sight; he decided to do a bit of exploring. He couldn't go to sleep yet, so he decided to memorize the layout of the house in the case of an emergency.  From the size of it, he figured it could shelter twenty or thirty people maximum. There were two visible exits; one in the kitchen and another near the stairs. If the doors were barred, he could easily jump from any second floor window; his abnormal agility allowed him many near impossible feats.

He went back and forth between the rooms trying to find hidden passages, to no avail. Either the owner of this house was a genius at keeping secrets or naively straight forward. There wasn't even a secret passageway in the makeshift library!

Something was wrong here. It was precisely designed for easy escape in case of fire, raid or any natural or unnatural calamity. This layout was oddly familiar. From what he understood, only a small number of spies could live under this roof at the same time, so that prevented the destruction of the whole crew. That's simple logic, but it almost felt like…

No way, that can't be it-

It was frustrating really. Naruto knew there was something lying there beyond his grasp. His gut told him that this whole setting wasn't as simple as it presented itself.

And Sakura… that girl might have been clueless about how field missions were like, but she knew enough soldier terminology to make him suspicious. She let slip words like  'Mission coordinator and 'status reports', she either had no idea what that job really involved or she was testing him.

He felt a tingling sensation in the back of his neck. Naruto had stumbled into something big. This whole spy network thing was child's play to him, to be honest it was crude, but the way it was carried was definitely familiar. It was also something he wanted to stay away from since he had that "argument" with the Master last year. Until he managed to retrieve what he had lost, and make amends, he couldn't bring himself to confront the issue altogether.

He left the cramped dining room and headed towards the kitchen. It was much smaller than the dining room, but there were two windows in the kitchen, and if there was one thing Naruto loved, it was watching the sunrise, it was peaceful.

A long time passed before he could hear any activity from upstairs. One by one, he saw some of the residents of the "orphanage" when they descended to the ground floor. Curious glances met him on the way out, a couple of girls and one boy with messy brown hair and a red triangle on both sides of his face, all his age.  The girls sped to the front door, so he couldn't get a decent view of them, but the boy lingered for a moment. His curiosity had a hostile vibe to it.

"'Morning," Naruto grinned in defense, he felt like he was grinning a lot lately, it was starting to tire him.

The boy said nothing, but gave Naruto a smile bearing teeth then he went out the door. Naruto's eyes widened for a second. The boy had very prominent canines, which looked more like fangs.

Yup, this place is pretty normal,  Naruto smiled at the thought and turned back to the kitchen.  Abnormal people attract other abnormal folk, and he didn't want to cause any more unsettling encounters.

In the kitchen, he was greeted by Ino who literally looked like hell. She might be pretty when well rested and prepared for the day, but right after waking up she looked like a mess.

"Whoa, don't you have a brush or something?" Naruto could only ask as he side-stepped a wooden spoon hurtling at him with incredible speed.

"Shut the hell up Naruto, you don't look any better," Her retort was weak, but he suspected she hadn't fully woken up yet.

"Oh, where are my shoes?! I need my shoes!" She frenetically circled the kitchen with a loaf of stale bread and a stick of butter in her hand, "SAKURA!!" She screeched, "SAKURA!" She kept yelling, "GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE!" Ino didn't seem to care if people were asleep or awake at five in the morning.

"SAKURA!!"

Not long after, Naruto heard heavy footsteps crashing down the stairs and finally hitting a wall with a loud thud. Then he saw Sakura panting, she looked as if she had woken up two seconds ago, still in her pajamas and messy hair.

All that screaming must have sobered up the crazy blond, because she spoke in a normal voice, "Hey, did you take my blue shoes again?"

"Ino,shut up! Master came back an hour ago; she went straight to bed,"

"Oh shit, seeya!!!" Ino's face went deathly pale, "I can walk without shoes."

She picked up her battered messenger bag and ran through the kitchen door. In her shaken state, she didn't notice the bird's nest on her head. He looked back at Sakura, who appeared even whiter than her pajama top.

"Do you wanna run?" Naruto offered sympathetically

"No," Sakura was shivering, "I can't, someone has to be here when –"

"What the hell is going on here? Where's that brat Ino?" An angry voice growled.

Naruto looked back in surprise, and before him were the biggest breasts in the whole kingdom. There was a body attached to them, true, but they were huge, gigantic, barely bound by a gray shirt. He struggled to lift his eyes to see the woman's face, and…

Something felt wrong, he knew this woman but he didn't remember exactly where from. She had long silky hair, the color of wheat, and amber eyes. She didn't look like someone who had just gotten up. Her eyes were clear, no dark circles. She looked middle-aged.

He tried to search his memory but he felt it slipping like water. Maybe she knew his Master; surely she was much older than that lazy bastard.

"Sakura, who's the kid?"

"Master, he's joined our cause." Sakura answered right away, "He was a soldier."

"Was he?" Master's eyes narrowed towards him.

"I'm right here you know," Naruto snapped, this woman put him on edge; he felt the flight or fight urge surfacing.

"A soldier? Which battalion, kid? Alpha? Omega?" Her eyes burned through him, and his every fiber begged to find the nearest sharp object.

"Why would I tell you, hag?" He glared back, his voice rising. She was taunting him. Those were dead battalions. They were obliterated in the first strike fifteen years ago, when he was an infant. Why did all adults have to link skill on the field with age and experience? Why was his master the only one who never stereotyped him?

"You lack discipline kid, no fringe platoon would take you, let alone a battalion," She retorted, rude or not, this woman oozed authority. He could tell she had been someone important at one point, maybe she still was.

"Alpha?" Sakura repeated in confusion, tired of being ignored and wanting some answers.

"Are you some soldier's son? Did you parents take you around camp and make you think you were strong?"

He could only glare at her, how dare she bring up his father?

Naruto would have loved to aim knife at the woman, but two things held him back. First, he was staying under her roof. Second, he could tell from her body language that she read his intentions and was ready to counter.  Her counter would probably kill him with one blow. The hag had that dangerous of an aura.

He was right, this was no meager spying operation run by impoverished and oppressed citizens. This was a covert operation run by an ANBU Leader, and he stumbled right into it. His lips turned up in a smile, and he rolled up his left sleeve.

"Uzumaki Naruto, at your service,"

The woman laughed in his face when she saw the ANBU brand on his arm, two lines in the form of half whirlwinds intertwining.

"ANBU sure has gone to the dogs since I left 'em. Now they're recruiting puppies and kittens," The EX- ANBU smiled at him, "Welcome to our humble home,"

"Master, what is ANBU?" Sakura whispered.

"Not now, Sakura, I'll explain it later, make the preparations for the new recruit," The old hag looked at Sakura and handed her some more supplies and commands.

It was ironic that he ran away from one ANBU only to find himself in the house of another. Naruto sighed in resignation.
